Improve SEO and Site Performance

Here is a tips which will improve SEO performance and site performance. Like, I have a domain yourdomain.tk. You can access the site through www.yourdomain.tk or yourdomain.tk . By accessing these two URL paths, the same web page are displayed as well. However, from system perspective, they are different.

The problem of www and non-www

A lot of people do think yourdomain.info and www.yourdomain.info are the same; in fact, www is a sub-domain. This can be verified by Drupal.
If you have install Boost Module in Drupal and enable their cache setting, you would notice the different between www.yourdomain.tk and yourdomain.tk. There are two seperate cache entries are generated of the page if you visit the same page on www.yourdomain.tk and http://yourdomain.tk. It is because Drupal generate cache files based on the full url. This means your cache hit rate will be lower and the performance gain you’d get from caching will be not as high.

SEO problem of www and non-www

Some of the site may not have cache which may not affect their site performance. However, more seriously, it would affect your SEO performance as well. Search engines like Google, Yahoo ,Bing indexing both versions resulting in resulting in duplicate content and sharing link benefit problems. Search engine do have the ability to determine the www and non-www version are idenical and cobine. However, in some occasion, the search engines fail to do so and we see both versions are indexed. We call this a www/non-www canonical problem. This issues would affect the PageRank and competitive Search engine results page (SERPs) since the link is shared over two sites.

Solution

The solution is very simple. We just need to add two lines into .htaccess file as follow:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mydomain\.com$ [NC]
 RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mydomain.com/$1 [L,R=301]

The codes on above would redirect all of the non-www traffic to www.

Solution in Drupal

Soluition is much easy. Default Drupal’s installaion come with .htaccess file. If you read the comment clearly, you’ll know that to do.
Just comment the Line 96 & Line 97.
